Caring for cloth diapers is easier than it seems! Follow this simple routine to keep your
baby’s diapers clean, hygienic, and long-lasting:
Step-by-Step Washing Guide
1. Remove Solids
• Newborns (breastfed only): No need to rinse – their waste is water-soluble.
• Formula-fed or solids-fed babies: Shake solids into the toilet and rinse using a
diaper sprayer or dunk-and-swish method.
2.Pre-Rinse or Soak (Optional but Recommended)
• Do a cold rinse or short wash cycle without detergent to remove urine and waste
before the main wash.
3. Main Wash
• Use a warm or hot wash cycle (40–60°C) with a cloth-diaper-safe detergent.
• Wash every 2–3 days to avoid odours and build-up.
• Avoid bleach, fabric softeners, and fragrance-heavy products — they reduce
absorbency and can irritate baby’s skin.
4. Drying
• Line dry in sunlight when possible — it naturally disinfects and removes stains.
How to Dry Cloth Diapers in Sunlight
1. Shake and Smooth
After washing, gently shake each diaper or insert to remove excess water
and reshape them before hanging. This helps them dry evenly and keeps their shape.
2. Use a Clothesline or Drying Rack
Hang the diapers outside in direct sunlight using pegs or clips. Use a drying rack if you
don’t have a clothesline — place it in a sunny spot like a balcony, courtyard, or garden.
3.Face the Fabric Toward the Sun
For best results, hang diapers and inserts with the absorbent inner fabric facing the sun.
This allows UV rays to naturally bleach out stains and sanitise the fabric.
Protect Waterproof Layers
4.If drying PUL or TPU (the waterproof outer shell), it’s best to:
• Hang them inside-out, and
• Dry in indirect sunlight or in partial shade.
Too much heat can cause fading or damage over time.
5.Bring in When Dry
Most inserts dry within a few hours on a sunny day. Bring them in as soon as they’re dry to
avoid stiffness or sun damage.
Bonus Tips:
• Sunlight sanitises naturally — no need for extra chemicals.
• If the weather is humid or rainy, use an indoor track near a sunny window or a low
heat dryer for inserts (not covers).
• Avoid fabric softeners when washing, as they reduce absorbency.
Extra Tips
• Store dirty diapers in a dry pail or wet bag until wash day.
• If you use pocket diapers, separate inserts from shells before washing.
Add a water softener if you have hard water to prevent residue build-up
